Liquorice root has a long tradition of use since ancient times for both people and animals. It is packed full of plant compounds with potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, and helps build a healthy immune system. The primary active compound is glycyrrhizin (glycyrrhizic acid), which is also responsible for the sweet taste. With horses, the root is most widely used for supporting the respiratory, digestive, immune and adrenal systems.
Liquorice root powder has demulcent properties which help soothe the respiratory tract and may ease irritation and coughing. It is a very useful herb for supporting healthy, clear airways as it contains properties that assist the expulsion of foreign particles, mucus and catarrh from the respiratory tract, helping optimise respiratory health. Horses with coughs or upper respiratory tract infections often select liquorice root.
The root is often used to help support digestive health. It may help soothe and settle the stomach, provide comfort and aid mild gastric complaints. Due to its soothing properties it is often selected by horses with digestive issues and stomach ulcers, and may help support ulcer repair. Liquorice root encourages the production of mucus that helps protect and repair the intestinal lining and its anti-bacterial properties discourage ulcer-causing bacteria.
Liquorice root is mildly oestrogenic and may help with hormone imbalances. It may also support a healthy liver function. The root has also been shown to reduce adrenal fatigue and cortisol deficiency, a common problem with stressed horses and those suffering from insulin resistance and Cushings. The glycyrrhizic acid in liquorice root supports maintenance of healthy cortisol levels in the body, which supports the adrenal system from being overtaxed. Cortisol is an important natural anti-inflammatory, so as well as supporting a healthy stress response, this helps reduce inflammation in tissues (including joints, hooves and laminae). It also helps the balance of hormones in the endocrine system.
